Former Mustang Named Consensus All-American

Posted on Wednesday, December 21, 2011

Arkansas Razorback and former CAC Mustang Joe Adams has notched a number of national awards this football season, and just last week reached consensus All-American status. The NCAA recognizes All-American teams from five different organizations: The Associated Press, American Football Coaches Association, Football Writers Association of America, Sporting News and the Walter Camp Football Foundation. By being named to four of the five teams, Adams has achieved status as a consensus All-American player.

This prestigious honor caps an already mounting list of season accolades for the senior wide receiver. That list includes being:

  • Named to the Coaches' All-SEC First-Team twice as an all-purpose player and punt returner

  • One of four finalists for the Paul Hornung Award, which is awarded to the most versatile player in college football

  • Named SEC Special Teams Player of the Year

  • Only player in the NCAA Football Bowl Subdivision with rushing, receiving and multiple punt return touchdowns.

  • Named First-Team All-American by the Sporting News as punt returner

  • Named First-Team All-American by the Football Writers Association of America as return specialist

  • Named Second-Team All-American by The Associated Press as all-purpose player

  • Named Second-Team All-American by the Walter Camp Football Foundation as punt returner

Adams’ 2011 season highlights with the Razorbacks include the following:

  • Returned 3 punts for touchdowns

  • Averaged 16.2 yards on 16 return attempts

  • Caught 49 passes for 630 yards and 3 touchdowns

  • Rushed 9 times for 138 yards and 1 touchdown

As a CAC Mustang, Adams garnered the following honors:

  • Two year All-Conference

  • One year 4A All-State and All-Star Team and All-Arkansas Team.

  • Played in the Under Armor All-Star Game in Orlando, Florida (December 2007)

Adams is expected to submit his requirements to participate in the NFL Draft, and if selected by a professional team, will be the third CAC Mustang to play professional sports. He looks to join A.J. Burnett (Class of '95, New York Yankees) and D.J. Williams (Class of '07, Green Bay Packers) in the ranks of Mustang alumni playing professional athletics.

When interviewed recently about earning postseason honors, Adams said, “It means a lot just to have all the dedication and hard work that I have been putting in over the last four years to pay off.” Adams and the Razorbacks take on the Wildcats of Kansas State Jan. 6 in the Cotton Bowl.

One of the most memorable highlights of Adams' season with the Razorbacks this year was a punt return for a touchdown against Tennessee on Nov. 12, 2011. The clip has surpassed 1.1 million views on YouTube and is available by clicking below:
